A photojourney across Sri Lanka: Nuwara Eliya and Ella

This post is dedicated to the towns of Nuwara Eliya and Ella, both of which are located high up on the Uva hills in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya, developed by the British as a hill retreat to escape from the tropical weather of the coast.

It is, as yet, quite unexplored. The agreeable climate of the town, along with the flora, rightly earned it the sobriquet of ‘Little England.’ Ella, on the other hand, offers very little to the mainstream tourist apart from its main strip.

The train that one takes, at first from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya) and then from the latter to Ella, is the highlight of the journey. Crevassing past green hills and vast meadows, it is rightly dubbed as one of the best train journeys in the world.

These hills have no beginnings and no ends.
