AFTER LOVE

When you walk across the street does it still feel the same?
What ever happened to that old baker
who had a funny smile and an addictive macaroon?
What are you up to these days?
Do you still have that ring upon your finger
or was it thrown away in a moment of rage
along with the photographs and mementoes
that marked the actuality of our existence
Or is it locked up in that old cupboard near your desk
I don’t think you still wear it around anymore
But what did you make of the finality of our connection
did you believe in the impermanence of human emotions
do you still feel that way?
I can almost imagine you sitting on your front couch
dressed in your most exquisite saree, all decked up and impatient
holding in one hand a cup of Darjeeling’s finest
gazing at me across the city
and willing me to blink.
