A photojourney across Sri Lanka: Dambulla

Dambulla, known predominantly for its cave temple which dates back to the first century BCE, was a fortuitous stop for me on the way to Kandy from Sigiriya.

I cannot mention how thankful I am of my friends who convinced me to stop here.

History enthusiasts and nature lovers alike will show interest in the cave temple, which features prominently in this piece.

A primate friend that I made.

The outer facade of the cave temple in Dambulla.

The recumbent Buddha idol carved inside the temple, reminiscent of the one seen in Polonnaruwa.

The idols and carvings inside the temple take one’s breath away.

The Buddha in Abhaya mudra- a posture that has reassured so many of us from time to time.

The meditating Buddha but with his eyes open- he sees us all.

The shadows play tricks that the mind can often overlook.

The courtyard of the temple complex offers panoramic views of the hill country of Sri Lanka. Kandy can be seen at a distance, but only to those who have a renewed way of seeing.
