As You Sleep

For Samaya Prasad

As you sleep, I remain standing, up to my knees in water.
Your eyelids close dreamlessly. I bat them shut as they
Protest over the last dredges of wakefulness. You smile
At last, too shy to acknowledge my presence; I walk
As lightly as I can so as not to dislodge this succour.

As you sleep, I drift between states of being awake
And being alive. The clock chimes mutedly to try
And become discordant with its surroundings.
The sun peeps in phases; the opaque clouds hover
Overhead and cast their pallid glances all day.

As you sleep, I become cognisant of the sporadic
Few moments when life finally seems to be at one
With me and my breath. When all discussions with
The pipal in the courtyard seem incongruent with the
Smile that I would be regaled to on your waking up.
