Best dosas in Hyderabad: Kamat Hotel, Nampally

In this post, I intend to announce the advent of a new gastronomical series termed ‘Celebration of the best masala dosas in Hyderabad.’ One of my favourite foods, the masala dosa has fascinated me from the time I was a kid and this series is a mere testament to my city and its vast accoutrements of the edible in question and suchlike.

The dosas will be judged on five parameters, namely texture, crispness, aroma, filling and taste. The ambience or aura of the eatery in question will play no part in the rating, which will, quite naturally, be on a five-point scale.

I kick this series off today, that is on 5 September 2023, and intend to wrap it up exactly a year to the day, 5 September 2024. It will also act as a reminder that no matter where life takes me a year from now, my love for masala dosas will endure.

I will also have to be careful to not eat them too often for fear of accumulating the gentle calories that they also present!

The first blog post of the series is on the masala dosa that I had at Kamat Hotel, Nampally over the weekend. This dosa was perhaps the biggest in size I have had in recent times and its masala filling was more than sufficing.

The chutney, made entirely of coconut, was refreshing to see in a city built almost entirely upon ones made from peanuts. The sambar, however, was not as enticing as one would expect from a Karnataka-based business.

The jaggery was not as off-putting- although it should have been- as much as its runny nature was. The dosa lived up to its hype, and dare I say, far encompassed the run-down state of the restaurant, which is also famous for its southern Indian fare.

It is located here.

Have you ever had masala dosa from Kamat, Nampally? What were your experiences like? Let me know in the comments section!
