Wayanad: A Photojourney

Photographs from my recent forays again into the Western Ghats, this time, near the Chembra Peak in Wayanad, Kerala.

Where is it: Wayanad is a district located in northeastern Kerala, bordering the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is, in fact, separated from the former by the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. Mepaddy and Kalpetta are two of its most renowned towns, along with Krishnagiri.

How to go: The best way is to go by bus from either Bengaluru or Mysore, from where direct services ply constantly. One can get off at Sultan Batheri and change buses from there in case no direct buses are available. Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu is also a good place to hail buses from.

Best time to visit: Any time of the year except April and May.

Where did I stay: Zostel Wayanad. There are very few commercial establishments in the district. Homestays, AirBnbs and backpacker hostels rule the roost.

Evening hues of the Western Ghats stretch out to the west.

The trail that leads to the peak of Chembra.

The heart-shaped lake. This is the last point for trekkers. The summit is closed off.

Chembra!

The sunset hues turn purple over the Western Ghats as the sun sets.
