They say it’s pouring cats and dogs
But somehow the rain has evaded us
I’ve seen you in college and asked around
And here at the cafeteria forecourt
Everybody seems to know you
It feels like you’ve seen me
But that’s just what I think
We exchange glances
And you wonder who I am
You’ve never seen me before
I don’t blame you for that
I don’t come to college very often
I even see you asking your friends about me,
But they’re clueless too,
They’ve never seen me around,
Hey, now you’re laughing,
I wonder if you’re laughing at me,
Even if you are, it’s fine,
At least I am some part of your world now
You turn to leave but your best pal peeks,
Perhaps to tell you whether I am worth it or not,
More giggles follow,
I stand there mesmerised and clueless at the same time
There’s something about you,
I think I’ve seen the last of you
Because I won’t be here tomorrow
And as you walk back from math class
You’ll once again be surrounded by your friends
Who say nothing in particular to you
Who just stay by your side all day long
And then you’ll see another boy who looks just like me
He’ll be a part of your new world now
When I go to college next, I’ll try to find you
But you’ll be nowhere to be seen
I won’t forget you, although I do know
That I’ll soon be forgotten
Like the last leaf of an unusually parched autumn.
OLD WORLD, NEW WORLD
