VERDICT

I will confess to you
Because you showed me the picture
Of the man who I had come to become
And the way you turned it over upside down
Showed a classic case of comic timing
And then I thought of that old man
Who had by now given up the struggle
With shadows now his only companion.

I will be honest with you

Because you made me think of those times
Wearing a big smile and a small laugh
Remembering those days of tedious tears
And petty battles, violent but not quite
You did not tell me the truth then
And now I recall chasing that model with a tragic air
Painting me as the fraud that I really was.

I will open up to you

Because I don’t recollect love with any warmth
Or these roses blooming in this faithless winter
And I won’t say that I am fine with
The girl next door who’s famous for her transience
Though I hope you remember that key-chain
And I feel like I have spared you the pain
But it will be years before I see you again.
