The crowd cheered, the applause was loud
But it was lost in the distant melee
The hero was going away again
His mother cried, for what knew she?
He tried to remain calm,
She always saw him off the same
He knew he couldnt turn back
As his tears came down again.
He wouldnt cry, he was taught so
He was their hero,
His mother could see him again
This was the last time, she wrote.
The hero left the shores, his destiny beckoning
This just wasnt the same
For what little was known to him
He would try to return soon again.
His destiny took him to places new
Which were brighter than his home-town
He was amazed by the red and blue
Yet couldnt help his frown.
These new places seemed to be so good
Their people were so nice.
Yet he longed for his mother and his town
He wanted to look into her eyes.
Enough was enough, one day he said
He’d return immediately, while they
Looked upon him and said
“What’s become of you, aren’t you afraid?”
He decided that he’d soon go home
For his destiny was now fulfilled
He’d achieved what his contemporaries couldnt though
He couldnt destroy what he’d built.
His welcome was strong, the crowd was loud
Yet it felt obstinate, so deep
He wanted to see his mother, they didnt let him
Until all he could make them see, let them keep.
They told him she was very sick,
But awaited her son’s walk
He rushed to his home and went by her side
But she was too frail to talk.
He asked her to talk to him,
Asked her how she felt, sat on the bed
But all he recieved was a painful stare
Worth a thousand words said.
His mother put her hand on his head
As if willing to say,
“Oh Son you’ve made us all proud
Why didnt you return a year today?”
He couldnt say, his voice choked
Tears dripping down his cheek
He now saw the outline of her body
Wondering if she would ever forgive.
He wanted to say that he’d done it all for her
He knew how he was so wrong
But his mother had gone long before
He could realize his destiny, too was gone.
